A Website That Does Not Sell Is Half a Product: Who Sells After the Visitor Arrives

Say 1,000 people visit a business website in a month, and 2% of them leave their details. That is 20 enquiries. Five of them arrive in the evening or at the weekend and get an answer only the next day, by which time some of the people who wrote have already booked with whoever replied first. Two land in an inbox nobody opens that week. That leaves 13 enquiries someone actually talked to in time, out of 1,000 people the business paid to bring in: for the design, the hosting, the ads and the content. The numbers here are an example, not a measurement, but their shape repeats in almost every small business: most of the money spent on a website goes into what happens before the click, and almost none goes into what happens after it. And what happens after it is the sale.

Three answers to "who sells on the website"

When a visitor arrives, someone has to take them from first interest to a conversation, and from the conversation to a booking, a quote or a payment. There are only three options for who that is.

Nobody. The website presents the business, and from there the visitor is on their own. They have to decide by themselves that they are interested, find the phone number, call during business hours, or fill in a form and wait. That is a brochure site in the exact sense of the word: a leaflet you can scroll. It works when the visitor decided before arriving, for example on a friend's recommendation. It works far less well when the visitor is still comparing.

A person. The form and the WhatsApp button pass the visitor to the owner, the receptionist or the salesperson, and they answer when they are free. This is the common model, and it works well right up to the limit of their free time. Visitors do not respect that limit: they browse on their phones in the evening, at lunch and on Saturday morning.

A system. An AI agent answers the question within seconds, at any hour, understands what the visitor is looking for, asks for a name and phone number once there is a reason to give them, offers a free slot and hands the person who needs a person to a person. The enquiry is saved to a record with its source, and from there it can be followed up.

Most websites are designed for the first option and staffed for the second. The question of this article is simple: who sells on your site after the visitor arrives, and what does it cost you.

Where a brochure site loses enquiries

The leak almost never shows in the website's reports, because the site sees visits, not conversations. It happens at four fixed points.

Outside business hours. Someone browsing in the evening does not wait for the morning to decide. When we checked this in practice, we measured response times at 98 private clinics by sending each of them the same WhatsApp message: on weekdays the answer came after an hour and a half on average, at weekends and on holidays after 14 hours, and six clinics never answered at all. These are businesses that pay for advertising so that people will write to them.

The form that lands in email. A "contact us" form sends an email, and the email goes to an inbox checked once a day, or to the promotions folder. It has no status and no owner, and nobody knows it went unanswered until the customer is no longer interested.

The visitor with a question. Many visitors will not leave a phone number before they get an answer to one question: do you do this, roughly how much does it cost, when is there a slot. A form does not answer questions. That visitor leaves and looks for a competitor whose website lets them ask.

The returning visitor. Someone who came in, asked and left to think comes back two days later. On an ordinary site they start from zero, and if they sent a WhatsApp message earlier, nobody connects the two enquiries. For the business, they are two strangers.

At all four points the website did its job: the visitor arrived, read and got interested. What is missing is someone to take it from there.

A site built around the conversation, not a chat glued onto a site

The usual way to build a website is design, pages and content first, and later, if at all, a chat window added as a plugin. The plugin gets a corner of the screen, a fixed script and an email address that receives whatever it collects. We wrote separately about why a chat plugin on an old site is not enough, with the focus on the technology. Here the focus is on the order.

At WhaleBiz we came from the opposite direction. We started with AI agents that answer and sell on WhatsApp and on websites, and with a CRM where every conversation is saved, and only later started building websites for clients. So the site is born connected, and the first question in planning it is not "what will the page look like" but "what will the visitor on this page want to ask, and who will answer".

In practice this changes a few small things that add up:

  • The conversation is the main action on every page, not a form at the bottom. The visitor asks first, and only when there is a reason do they leave a phone number or pick a time.
  • The WhatsApp button on every page opens its own message, so the agent knows which page the customer came from and carries on from there, instead of asking "how can I help?".
  • Every form becomes a record in the CRM with its source, and an enquiry from a number we already know joins the existing record, even if the person wrote earlier on another channel.
  • The same agent answers on the website and on WhatsApp, with the same knowledge of the business, so the answer does not change with the channel.

What changes in the numbers when a system answers

An AI agent on a website does not create demand. It will not bring visitors who would not have come, and it will not persuade someone who does not need the service. What it does is stop losing the people who already arrived. In the example from the opening, the five evening enquiries get an answer within seconds, the two that were swallowed by email are in the CRM with a status, and 20 stay 20. On top of that come the visitors who would never have filled in a form but do ask a question, and some of them leave their details after they get an answer.

To know what this is worth for you, you do not need to believe anyone. You need to measure five things, before and after:

  1. What share of enquiries arrives outside business hours. In many businesses it is a larger share than the owner assumes, because they only see the messages in the morning.
  2. How long it takes to the first answer, on weekdays and at weekends separately.
  3. How many enquiries got no answer at all. You cannot know this while enquiries sit in email, and that is exactly why you measure it.
  4. How many visitors started a conversation and left no details, and what they asked. Those questions are excellent material for the next pages of the site.
  5. How many bookings, quotes or payments started on the website. This is the only number that really matters, and when the conversation and the record live in the same system, you see it without stitching reports together.

Three websites, the same visitor

The middle column is the interesting case: it looks as if the problem is solved, because there is a chat window. But if the window does not understand a free-text question and does not save what it collects somewhere someone actually works from, the visitor simply gets stuck in a different place.

What WhaleBiz does today, and what stays with a person

Today, on any website you can add code to, an AI agent for your website is installed with one line of code or through Google Tag Manager: on WordPress, Wix, Shopify or a site built from scratch. It answers in whatever language the visitor writes in (Hebrew, Russian, English and more), asks for a name and phone number early and explains why, and saves every conversation to the built-in CRM. The text widget is on every plan, including the entry plan. Booking inside the chat window and sending photos, a price list or a video start on the Standard plan, and so does WhatsApp. The voice widget is still in beta and available on request on the Business plan. What each plan includes is in the full price list.

When you need more than an agent on an existing site, we also build websites and landing pages for clients, with the agent, the forms, the WhatsApp buttons and conversion tracking connected from day one. That work is on request, and the price is set by scope after a short check-up. What we do not do: we do not sell SEO promotion and we do not promise a place on Google.

And what stays with a person, on purpose: negotiating a large deal, a professional question that needs judgement (medical, legal or technical), and a customer who asks to talk to a human. In those cases the agent does not guess. It collects the details and passes the team an orderly enquiry with a summary, so whoever calls the customer back does not ask the same questions again. If the conversation is a full sales conversation, with qualification and follow-up, it is worth knowing the AI sales agent as well.

How to find out in one week who sells on your website

You do not need a consultant for a first picture. It is enough to do to yourself what a customer does:

  • On Thursday evening open the site on your phone, fill in the form with a real question and measure when an answer arrived, and who answered.
  • Tap the WhatsApp button on a service page and check whether whoever answers knows which page you came from.
  • Open the inbox the forms go to and count how many enquiries from the last month got no answer, or you do not know whether they did.
  • Sort last month's enquiries by hour. The part that arrived after six in the evening and at weekends is the part nobody sells to in time.
  • Ask whoever answers what people ask most. If the answers are always the same, that is exactly what an agent can answer instead, and it is also what is missing from the website.

If after that week it turns out the problem is who answers and not the site itself, there is no need to build a new website: you connect an agent to the existing one. The guide to installing an AI agent on a website walks through it step by step. If it turns out the structure itself does not lead to any action either, that is the time to think about a site built around the conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a new website for my site to sell?

Not necessarily. An AI agent is installed on an existing site with one line of code, on WordPress, Wix, Shopify or a site built from scratch, and the existing forms can be connected to the CRM. A new website is worth the investment when the structure itself does not lead to action, and that is checked in the check-up before deciding.

Does an AI agent on the website replace the contact form?

It does not have to. Some visitors prefer a form, and you can keep it. The difference is that the form and the conversation go into the same CRM record, with their source, instead of an email nobody marks as handled.

What happens when a visitor asks something the agent does not know?

The agent does not make up an answer. It collects the visitor's details and phone number, and passes the team an orderly enquiry with a summary of the conversation, so whoever gets back to them already knows what was asked.

How much does a website that sells cost?

It depends on what is missing. An agent on an existing site is part of the regular plans, and the text widget is included in all of them. Building a new website is work on request, and the price is set by the number of pages, languages, landing pages and integrations, after a short check-up. Plan prices are kept up to date on the pricing page.

Will a website with an AI agent rank higher on Google?

We do not promise that and we do not sell SEO promotion. A fast, accessible site with content that answers real questions helps, but Google decides the ranking. What the agent does change is what happens to the visitors who already arrived.
